7-Week Memoir Writing Class
Cost: $445 When: Thursdays, 5:30 - 8pm EDT, September 14 - October 26 Where: Zoom Enrollment is capped at 12 students 0 spots left First, you do not need to be the world’s youngest surgeon/senator/CEO in order to write a memoir. You can write about your dog if you do it well. Memoir is all in the telling. Together, we’ll explore the possibilities of dramatic presentation—how you can take a seemingly small-stakes memory, and very little action, and methodically create the conditions for conflict. To accomplish this, we’ll study excerpts from contemporary memoirs and follow writing prompts inspired by each. This class will be conducted as a generative writing seminar. Every week, I'll offer guided prompts, discuss craft techniques, and invite you to talk about any writing challenges you're facing. We'll cover concepts such as: the self on the page, narrative and reflective arcs, characters other than ourselves, scene-building, artful telling, research tactics, and backstory and front story. We'll have a shared Google Drive that includes additional prompts, handouts about writing techniques, a course pack of recommended readings, and our in-class slides. My goal is for you to leave the class with 1) new writing you're excited about, and 2) strategies to help you keep writing when you feel stuck. There's no workshop component. If you have questions about the class format or want to provide context about your project, please feel free to include those in the comment box. |
